Sorry for the late update. We have all been quite busy with our individual projects. Azam’s new solo album “From Night to the Edge of Day”, has been received extremely well internationally. It debuted at #1 on the iTunes World Music Chart and remained in the top 10 for weeks. It has received glowing reviews worldwide and once again established Azam as an important figure in the international World Music community. Azam gave a debut concert in Montreal for the album release. Two of the videos of this performance can be found on our media page as well as on youtube.
Loga’s solo debut album “Mehraab” has also been released recently. This album was produced and released independently by Loga, so if you have not purchased a copy, be sure to do so, as it is a beautiful piece of work. The wonderful news about this album is that it will be released officially in Iran this fall, making it the first of Loga’s many albums to be released in his native country.
Carmen has also been busy with his many productions and remixes which have taken him to many corners of the world.
We are now finally diving into the new Niyaz album which is in production now. We are extremely anxious to finish it so we can share it with you and begin touring with some new music. We have gathered some great material for this new recording which will feature an amazing cast of guest musicians. We have decided to release the album at the beginning of 2012 since this year we will be touring and focusing on solo projects.
Please visit our tour page for concert dates. There are still a number of dates to be added so please check back. These series of concerts will be a combination of Azam’s solo work as well as Niyaz.
Our best wishes to all of you
February 21 2011
We would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. We are very excited about 2011, especially since we will be recording a new album this spring and summer. Carmen has been spending a lot of time in Montreal mixing Azam’s solo album, then Loga’s solo album, and preparing new tracks for the next Niyaz album. The time we spent together mixing/ eating/ playing/ laughing/ brainstorming really enriched and in many ways reignited our bond as collaborators. It looks like we will be spending a lot of time together this year to produce what we hope will be our best album. The material we have gathered and prepared so far is very inspiring for us and we hope we can materialize it in a way that will inspire all of you as well.
There will be limited tour dates this year, mostly in Europe, as we will focusing on recording and Azam and Loga will both be releasing solo albums. Depending on the schedule of the scoring projects Azam is committed to, she will most likely tour her new work, so be sure to check in for more on that. Details for both solo album can be found here shortly.
Speaking of scoring projects, Azam, Loga, along with their Turkish friend and Saz Virtuoso, Ulas Ozdemir, will be composing an original score this summer for a major Turkish film entitled “The Face of Love”, by Osman Sinav, one of Turkey’s biggest Television producers and directors. Carmen will also be contributing his magical touch to certain scenes in the film which require an electronic score. Needless to say, this is a very exciting project for us.
We thank all of you for your continued support and we hope to share new music and concerts with you soon.
November 17 2010
The next Niyaz album is underway. Carmen was in Montreal late October to work on a couple of new tracks and to mix Azam’s new solo release which is due out in March 2011 in Canada, and in March or April worldwide. Loga and Azam will be spending the next month in Istanbul to enjoy some time off and visit friends.
While in Turkey, Niyaz will be giving three concerts, as well as several concerts in Europe. There were several offers to perform in a number of cities in Turkey this fall, but due to the heavy schedule it would entail on the part of Azam, Loga and their son who travels with them, Niyaz limited their tour in Turkey to just three shows, with hopes to visit other cities in 2011. Please visit the tour page for details.
May 25 2010
It’s hard to believe summer is here already. We hope that 2010 has been a great year for all of you so far.
We have a lot of updates. Azam, Loga and son Iman are officially and legally residents of Montreal, Canada. Although they will be returning to Los Angeles periodically for work and will spend a few months out of the year in Istanbul, Montreal will be their main home and studio base. This is a very exciting beginning for them and the change of pace mentally and physically will undoubtedly reveal itself in the next Niyaz recording.
As Azam is putting the final touches on her upcoming solo album, we have already begun writing and recording the next Niyaz album which we plan on releasing in early 2011. We have some great ideas and material lined up, which we look forward to sharing with you all. Once again we plan on releasing both an electronic as well as acoustic album, but this time we may change the format a bit and possibly even have a number of songs which will be unique to each recording. We will know more as the project unfolds.
We have also posted some new tour dates for the rest of the year. There are still some additional dates which will be posted as soon as they are confirmed. Details for the shows listed will be posted shortly.
For those of you who have written us regarding the cancelled concerts in Europe, we thank you for your support. It was a very surreal time for anyone who was in Europe. Loga and Azam arrived in Italy days before their first concert to enjoy a vacation with their son, and then mother nature decided to remind us how powerful she can be. The remainder of the band could not make it to Europe as all flights were cancelled because of the volcano ash. As unbelievable and sad as it was for Azam and Loga, the show went on in Italy with Azam and Loga performing as a duo at the very prestigious grand opera house Teatro Comunale Luciano Pavarotti in Modena. Although two of the concerts were cancelled in Slovenia and Cergy, France, we are happy to announce that both have been re-scheduled for later this year. Azam and Loga also performed as a duo in Grande- Synthe, France at the Festival Mondes Pluriels, which featured other notable artists such as Trilok Gurtu, Natacha Atlas, Sevara Nazerkhan etc.
Aside from that, don’t miss the opportunity to see the upcoming major blockbuster release, Prince of Persia- The Sands of Time, which features an original piece of music writing by Azam and Loga for the film. Unfortunately this track will not be included in the soundtrack release by the incredible Harry Gregson-Williams because it is part of the source music, but nevertheless it was a tremendous honor to have had the opportunity to be part of the film and to have worked with Harry.
Azam’s voice is also featured extensively on the upcoming score for the Prince of Persia video game which will be released in conjunction with the film. This score was written by award-winning composer Tom Salta and it is truly a great body of work. For more on this please visit tomsalta.com/behindPrinceOfPersia.html
Thanks for visiting us. Please check out the media page for new photos from this year’s travels and concerts so far, and check back in with us soon for more news and updates. Our warmest regards to all of you with hopes for a great summer.
December 22 2009
Hello everyone! We’re back from Europe & Turkey. It’s been a great summer and fall for us. The concerts were all a tremendous success, thanks in great part to all our fans who turned up in large numbers to support us. The most memorable concert for us was in Istanbul where we shared a wonderful evening with 600+ enthusiastic fans and friends who gave us a welcome we will never forget. The venue we performed at had a maximum capacity of 600 people, so it was very sad for us that so many people who stood outside in the rain that night, were unable to attend the concert. But we are thrilled to announce that next summer we will return to this beloved city to perform at an open air theater which holds 5000 people. We are all very excited about this.
Next year will be a touring year for us and we hope to find time in between to begin work on the next Niyaz album. In February, we will be doing a small tour on the east coast in the US. We have also been invited to showcase at RIDEAU in Montreal the same month. In April, we will return to Europe for a number of concerts in Germany, Slovenia and France. Then in June/ July we will go on tour in Canada. And finally in July/August we will return to Turkey and Europe for concerts in Istanbul, Italy and France. The details for all concert dates will be posted in the coming months.
In the meantime, Loga & Azam are both working a solo albums as well as a new ambient project with visual artist Michael Snyder who is responsible for all the Niyaz artwork to date. Azam & Loga will also be featured in the highly anticipated major motion picture release Prince of Persia- The Sands of Time. Together they created an original piece of music for the film and had the great honor of working with one of the greatest composers in the world, Harry Gregson-Williams.
As Azam & Loga will be moving to Montreal in February, we are planning on giving two goodbye concerts in Los Angeles and San Francisco. We will announce the dates as soon as we have locked them. For all those who have not been able to attend a Niyaz concert due to logistical reasons, we are currently working a DVD which will feature live performances in Istanbul, Paris and Los Angeles, along with other surprises. We hope to complete this DVD by the end of 2010 and make it available through our website.
We are grateful to all of you for making another year such a memorable one for us. We are truly looking forward to seeing you all in 2010. You are welcome to check out some of our latest pics on the media page as well as a wonderful full length article in the latest issue of the prestigious fRoots magazine which we have posted on the reviews page.
We wish you all the very best for the coming new year.
July 14 2009
I am currently in Istanbul with Loga and our son Iman. We’ve spent most of the summer here which has been lovely and a much needed respite from the usual. We met the rest of our band in London and traveled for a week to some magnificent spots in Europe for some memorable performances and experiences. I’ll try to put together some pics to share. We’ll be returning to America in August. In the meantime I’m doing some leg work here for my upcoming solo project. Loga is also working on a solo album which will feature the heart wrenching voice of Persian classical singer Khosrow Ansari. I dare say their album is one of the most exciting works I’ve heard in a long time. Things have changed radically in the music business, and the way in which music will be consumed is being completely redefined, so Loga and I have decided it would not be a good idea to release anything in the near future- at least not until we gain a better grasp of how we want our music to reach audiences from now on.
The rest of the year will be quite busy for us. In October will be returning to Europe and the Middle East for another small tour and at the end of 2009 we will initiate one of the biggest changes in our lives. After living in America for over two decades, we have decided to move to Montreal, Canada where we will build a new home base and from there we will travel to Istanbul which will become our second home for a few months out of every year. With Iman coming into our lives, everything came under question especially where we think would be the best place to raise him. Canada is a place that resonates with us on many social and political levels, and Istanbul of course is in the East- where our heart is, where our blood is. We want Iman to know his Eastern soul and hopefully in his adult life, find a positive way to contribute to this part of the world.
I will be closing a huge chapter in my life at the end of this year. A great many unknowns face me and I embrace them gladly, knowing for certain that my son, my marriage, my inner world and my work can only benefit from this change. I look forward to sharing more with you in the coming months.
November 10 2008
As we near the end of yet another year, we would like to give everyone an update on what we’ve been up to and our plans for 2009.
We have just returned from Turkey. We performed at a beautiful historical site in a city called Diyarbakir. This is a predominantly Kurdish area of Turkey virtually untouched by tourism, so it was quite a memorable experience for us. We were invited to perform by Bejan Matur, a renowned poet and writer who is quite famous in Turkey. Our performance was the first official concert to take place in Diyarbakir and will mark the beginning of Bejan’s new organization which will focus on bringing music of various parts of the Middle East to Diyarbakir in hopes of inspiring people to travel to this magical undiscovered region. We’ve posted some photos of our concert and travels so visit the media page.
Next we will be traveling to Dubai and then we will begin focusing on 2009. Aside from a handful of shows in California, it is looking like we will be spending much of 2009 touring in Europe and in Mexico, and Azam, Loga & Iman will be spending a few months in Istanbul where Azam will be recording her next solo album.
Given the success of our double album, we decided to put together two bands- one solely acoustic and the other will be acoustic/ electronic. Our debut concert for Nine Heavens in Turkey featured our brand new acoustic band and included two of the incredible musicians from Turkey who performed on the album, Ulas Ozdemir on Baglama & Vocals and Omer Avci on Percussion. We are also honored to be joined by virtuoso Palestinian Oud player Naser Musa. On Tabla we have the masterful Salar Nader from Afghanistan who is considered one of Zakir Hussain’s great protégés. And last but not least we have the great pleasure of being joined by the ever creative Miles Jay on Upright Bass. This is a phenomenal band and we hope that you will make it to one of the many performances we will have in 2009.
We wish everyone the best in the coming year and we look forward to sharing some of it with you.
August 30 2008
It’s hard to believe we are coming up on fall already. Although we had planned on touring for Nine Heavens in 2009 we could not pass up two wonderful invitations to perform in beautiful Turkey and in Dubai. We have added these dates to our tour page. We are currently working on adding dates either later in the year or early 2009 in the Los Angeles & San Francisco area. Other than that, it is currently looking like the majority of our touring in 2009 will take place in Europe but we will keep you all posted as we work on possible US & Canada dates as well.
Thank you for your continued support.
July 26 2008
Welcome to our new website everyone! Thanks to our talented team, our web designer Oussama Mubarak of OZarts and Michael Snyder, our art director, your visit will undoubtedly be an enjoyable one.
The website will be completed very soon. We are all working very hard on the remaining elements which when completed will create an environment you will hopefully enjoy revisiting often. We receive so many e-mail from fans asking if they can purchase our recordings directly from us and we are thrilled to finally be able to offer this through our site. The shop will include both Niyaz albums, beautiful newly designed t-shirts, Azam Ali’s solo albums, her albums with Vas, Loga Ramin Torkian’s previous recordings with his group Axiom of choice, as well as some other new surprising projects to come which will only be available here………..
Thank you, all of you in various parts of the world who have shown your fervent support for Niyaz and made the release of Nine Heavens such a huge success. Thanks to all of you Niyaz debuted at #1 on the itunes world chart, #4 on the Billboard world chart, and #1 on the world music radio charts in Europe. We are also greatly honored that the album has been received so well by the press/media and we are proud to share some of the reviews with you. We will post more as they come in.
Although we have no intention to do any intensive touring until 2009, there have been several offers coming in from Dubai and Turkey for the fall which we may accept. If this happens we will gladly add a few shows in the Los Angeles, San Francisco area so check back for further news. We are currently putting together a stunning new lineup of musicians who will breathe new life into our latest work.
We hope you’ve enjoyed visiting our new site. Come back soon.
June 21 2008
It is with great pride and joy that we share with you our latest work- Nine Heavens. Over the past few weeks we have been overwhelmed with gratitude at the excitement so many of you have shown. The preorder sales have been record breaking for all of us and we cannot thank each of you enough for this great act of support for our work. We hope that you thoroughly enjoy this new body of work which is infused with so much of our passion and love for what we do and believe in. Nine Heavens will be available worldwide. Releases in Canada, UK and Turkey are simultaneous with the US release although France, Spain and certain other regions in Europe are set for a later date this year to coincide with plans for a 2009 European tour.
In the coming weeks our immensely talented web designer Oussama Mubarak will be launching our new website which will be much more extensive. We will be adding a few new pages for now and plan on expanding the site even further in the near future.
During our 2006 & 2007 worldwide tours, we sold out of the beautiful T-shirts which we had designed and planned on selling through our website. We apologize to all of you who wrote us were not able to purchase one. The good news is that Michael Snyder, the great mastermind and artist behind all the magnificent Niyaz imagery, has designed a whole new series of T-shirts for us which will be available for purchase in the next few weeks. The current designs feature some of the Persian imagery and band logo from the new album. We will also be creating some additional calligraphy designs, which will feature some of the Persian poetry from Nine Heavens. The T-shirts are truly stunning and like our music, they are a unique blend of the traditional and the modern.
We thank you all once again for your support without which none of this would be possible.
April 04 2008
Happy spring everyone and to all Iranians Happy Nouruz! We have a lot of great news to share with you. First and foremost on January 3rd, 2008 Azam Ali & Loga Ramin Torkian welcomed their beautiful son Iman Ali Torkian into this world. Azam & Loga were married in India in 2003 after a wonderful 17 year friendship which led to their creative partnership and now to this tremendous jointure. We are extremely thrilled about this new addition to our lives.
The new album entitled “Nine Heavens” is officially completed. It is set for release on June 24th, 2008 on Six Degrees Records. We are extremely proud of this recording and look forward to sharing it with you. As mentioned before, we will be releasing two different versions of the album in the same package. One will be the electronic/acoustic version of Nine Heavens embodying the original philosophy of our desire to bring together the ancient and the modern, and the second version will be the solely acoustic recordings of these songs. The acoustic recordings are so rich, we are confident fans of both genres will enjoy it.
We will be putting together a handful of shows for later this year but plans for a full US, Canadian and European tour in 2009 are currently underway.
November 28 2007
Thank you for all your anxious e-mails inquiring about the release of our next album. The new work entitled “Nine Heavens” is coming together beautifully and we are beyond thrilled with the results so far. We have completed all the acoustic recordings and have begun the process of incorporating the electronics. The new material has turned out to be even more complex and intricate compared to the first album. In many ways it is a lot more traditional or what we prefer to call post-traditional . The album features some of the highest caliber musicians from Iran, India and Turkey, all of whom like us were born and raised in the traditions they represent, bringing a very authentic quality to the music, but with a fresh perspective. A large part of the percussion was recorded in Turkey and the results are in a word “stunning”.
Since the acoustic recordings for the album have turned out to be quite rich on their own, we have decided to do something never been done before by an acoustic/electronic band. Nine Heavens will be released as a double album. One will be the acoustic/electronic version embodying the original concept of the band, which is to bridge the gap between the traditional and the modern by creating a finely tuned balance of acoustic and electronic music. The second will be a solely acoustic version of the album, which will feature a more organic approach with a stronger emphasis on traditional instrumentation with added percussion. Our intent is to make accessible to audiences alternate versions of the album so that fans of traditional world music as well as fans of electronica can enjoy the version of the album more suited to their individual palette. This is an exciting endeavor for us and we cant wait to share it with you.
As far as the lyrical framework for the album, there are four songs in Farsi. We have once again recorded two beautiful folk songs from Khorassan, Iran, which aside from the vocal melody, include our own original arrangement and composition. For the other two Persian songs we decided to abandon the beautiful poetry of our beloved Mevlana J. Rumi, and this time focus on the works of another great Iranian Sufi mystic/poet/musician, Amir Khosrau Dehlavi who was one of the greatest Persian poets born and raised in India who went on to become an iconic figure in the cultural history of the Indian subcontinent. We feel that Amir Khosraus poetry represents very much the spirit of our work because of his strong ties to the culture and music of India and Pakistan where to this day he is revered by thousands.
For the Urdu portion of the album comprised of three songs, we are featuring Rubaiyats and ghazals by renowned 18th century poets Khwaja Mir Dard and Hali. Lastly, given the close musical relationship between Iran and Turkey, the influence their music has had on us personally and how warmly the people have embraced and supported our work, we have included a very soulful traditional Turkish song on this album from the region of Maras.
Given the richness and intricacy of the acoustic recordings which prompted us to release two versions of Nine Heavens, the process has unexpectedly turned out to be a larger yet more exciting endeavor, but we are still aiming to have it completed in time for an early spring or summer release in 2008. We will keep you all posted and as soon as we can, we will post some clips from the new album for you to hear.
In the meantime we have posted some photos from our summer European tour on the media page. Have a great remainder of the year and we will be in touch in 2008.
July 10 2007
Quite a year it has been so far! We have just returned from Europe and this brings the touring for our first album officially to an end. What an amazing experience we have had these past few months. After touring New Mexico and a few shows on the east coast in the States, we had the pleasure of spending a week in beautiful Mexico for three performances, and then spending a couple of weeks in some pretty spectacular cities in Europe.
There are few words to describe how blessed we feel with regards to the unpredictable success Niyaz has generated, and the rare opportunity we have had to perform all over the world these past two years for thousands of people who have received us so warmly. We never imagined this when we set out to create this project. It is therefore a great affirmation to us that our message and the sincerity of our work has found a very useful place in this world and in the lives of many people from different cultures and religious backgrounds.
Although we continue to get offers for additional shows this year, we have decided that it is time to stop touring and put all of our energy into the new recording which we hope to complete by the end of this year. We will keep you all posted on how the album is unfolding and any other interesting news.
Thank you, each one of you, for your support of Niyaz. We cant wait to share some new material with you and see you once again in 2008.
The music Azam and Loga wrote for the upcoming major Sony game entitled Logans Shadow will be available through iTunes soon. There is a strong possibility of releasing the album through Six Degrees as well in the near future. The score is a fantastic collaboration between Azam, Loga, composers Justin Burnett and Jonathan Mayer. Links and samples will be provided soon.
March 28 2007
Happy spring everyone and Happy New Year to all our Iranian fans! Another fantastic year is taking shape for us. We will begin our touring season with shows on the east coast and New Mexico. These performances will be in some very beautiful halls so we hope to see you there. We have been receiving so many e-mails from people asking why we are not coming to their city. Please understand that this is completely out of our control. We go where presenters are willing and have the financial means to organize concerts. Our wonderful agent is working very hard to make sure we come to as many cities as possible, so please be patient with us and we promise if we do not make it to your area this time around, we will in the next run.
In June we leave for some concerts in various parts of Europe. We are extremely excited about these as they will take us to some places none of us have been to like Estonia, Portugal & Sweden. There are some additional dates yet to be confirmed for Europe so please check back.
We feel extremely fortunate that there is so much interest building all over the world for us to perform, and although we would like to continue touring, we have all decided that after July we really need to take a break for the rest of the year to focus on the new Niyaz album we have been working on which we plan to release early 2008. We never imagined in 2005 that we would be touring for two years with our debut album. We feel extremely grateful for the positive response from our fans, the media, & presenters, and it is time for us to take all that great energy and put it into a wonderful new recording.
The new material we are working on is so inspiring for us and we cannot wait to share it with you. We are planning to do something very special as part of this new recording which we will reveal as we get closer to its completion.
In the meantime we hope to see you out there this summer and we thank you for all your support.
October 19 2006
Well another year is slowly coming to an end. As we look back and reflect on what an amazing year it has been for us, we once again want to express our gratitude to you, our fans. After a whirlwind tour which took us to Canada, Turkey, Spain, France, and parts of the US, we are now taking all that wonderful energy generated on the road and gearing up to start writing and recording a new album. 2007 is already shaping up to be a busy year for us. Dates in the UK are currently being scheduled for March, and we will most likely be touring in France and other parts of Europe next summer. Depending on how busy we will be touring, we will decide whether to release the new album in 07 or 08. We want to take our time and be sure that the vision for the new cd is not compromised in any way.
In the meantime Azam is working on some very exciting film projects so be sure to visit her website at www.azamalimusic.com for more details.
June 15 2006
Niyaz has been selected to perform at WOMEX 2006- the worldwide music expo which is to be held in Sevilla, Andalusia/Spain 25-29 October. With almost one thousand proposals submitted and only a mere three dozen slots available, this is a huge accomplishment for Niyaz. WOMEX (The World Music Expo), is the world’s premier networking point exclusively dedicated to world, roots, folk, ethnic, traditional, local and diaspora music of all kinds. With more than 2.100 professional visitors from more than 80 countries, WOMEX provides high visibility for both new and established performing artists alike, many of whom in the past have launched or enhanced major international careers thanks to a WOMEX showcase.
April 14 2006
We are starting to post the dates for our upcoming 2006 & 2007 performances. Dates include shows in Canada, North America, and Europe. There are still many dates being confirmed so please keep checking back for more shows and further details.
We are grateful to the Canadian government who provided us with one of the largest grants ever given to a non-Canadian group, in order to make our tour of Canada possible.
The album has been released in France and thanks to the support of Radio France has been doing extremely well. Radio France has invited us to perform in three festivals in France this July. They will be filming the performances which will be broadcasted on French television later this year.
The three of us set out to do a project that would be unique and ground breaking. The enthusiasm and support we have been receiving from fans, presenters, and critics has been a confirmation of our musical intent and passion surrounding this project. And now, for us to be able to perform this music at prestigious events such as The Montreal Jazz Festival in Canada is a dream come true.
We look forward to seeing you all out there……………..
The live video of Allahi Allah is up so check it out on the media page.
This month Niyaz is featured on KCET’s new multimedia online series called Global Sounds LA. Visit KCET online and listen to an in-depth interview with Niyaz by host of KCRW’s Cafe LA, Tom Schnabel. The new online series features local bands who reflects LA’s cultural diversity and cross-pollination of musicians.
Azam Ali has just finished her new highly anticipated solo album which is set for release in June in Canada, and July in the US on Six Degrees Records. Produced by herself and Carmen Rizzo, the album, entitled “Elysium for the Brave”, has been described as Azam’s most ambitious work to date. More than any of her other solo or collective works, this album displays Azam’s immense versatility as a singer and originality as an artist. Although there are a number of songs that feature the awe inspiring middle eastern vocal stylings that fans of Azam’s work have come to love, this album is predominantly sung in English. The album also features a diverse array of acclaimed musicians from Loga Ramin Torkian, Trey Gunn and Pat Mastelotto of King Crimson, to film composers Tyler Bates and Jeff Rona. A separate website, www.azamalimusic.com is in the works which will focus on her new solo endeavor and will also include information on all of her projects and albums to date.
January 30 2006
Hope the year is off to a good start for everyone. There is a lot to update you on. We just returned from performing at the third annual globalFEST in NYC, a showcase which is part of the convention of the Association of Performing arts Presenters. This year’s event hosted 13 acts from all over the world performing two nights at New York’s Public theater. The response we have received so far has been overwhelming. It is no secret that globalFEST has been a huge launching pad for many artists. The shows have stirred a lot of interest from Presenters so hopefully we will be able to do a proper US tour either this year or in 2007.
The Canadian tour is shaping up quite nicely and we are hoping to have the dates up soon. We are also working on a European tour, which will begin towards the end of May till the end of June. So far we are looking at dates in Spain, the UK, Germany, Switzerland, France and Istanbul.
Our debut cd will be released in France this March and has just been selected by FIP Radio, which is part of Radio France, in their “selection FIP” operation for the month of February.
We have been receiving so many e-mails regarding the Niyaz remixes specifically how they can be purchased, so we are happy to announce that the digital EP is now available and can be obtain from the Six Degrees Records online shop, or your favorite digital vendor. The EP debuted at #32 on the iTunes Electronica chart and rose to #18, which made the full Niyaz CD enter back into the same charts. The Niyaz CD also entered in at #13 on the iTunes best of world music chart for 2005.
If you have not yet had a chance to see Niyaz live, visit the media page to view a video of Niyaz performing one of our fans favorites, “The Hunt” , live at The Knitting Factory in Hollywood. The other video, which we will also make available soon, is “Allahi Allah”.
For those who have had a chance to see us live, you know that Satnam Ramgotra (Tabla), and Dimitrix Mahlis (Oud), have become an integral part of Niyaz. Although Loga and Azam will still be the main composers and artistic directors of the group, and Carmen will be as involved as his busy schedule allows, we would really like to take certain step to raise Dimitris and Satnam’s profile in the band, to reflect their contribution to the music.
Thank you for all the love and support you have all sent our way. We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming shows.
Also, we would like to invite our fans to pick up the new issue of Namak magazine, which is the premier culture and lifestyle magazine for and reflective of the new generation of Iranians across the globe. The latest issue, out on Jan 19, features Niyaz on the cover, and also an in depth interview with Azam and Loga about everything from their music to cultural identity. This is a fantastic non-religious, non-political magazine with intelligent writing. We are extremely proud to be the featured story for this issue because we believe so much in what the magazine is trying to accomplish. If you are Iranian, or non-Iranian but interested in knowing about Iranian culture, we encourage you to subscribe to this magazine and help support their vision. We have set up a link from our site to theirs where you will be able to find more information.
December 15 2005
We are very proud to announce that Niyaz entered in at #76 in the top 150 of the best albums of 2005 on WMCE (world music charts Europe ) out of over 1000 nominations. It is an honor for us because we are the only Iranian group to have made it into the top 150 despite the fact that the record has not been released in most parts of Europe. The album was released in the UK a few months ago and the response has been incredible. We have signed on with one of the best world music booking agencies in the UK and will hopefully make our way there next summer as well. There will also be releases in the early part of next year in France and Spain. It looks like 2006 is shaping up to be a busy year for us. The Canadian tour is coming together well and will most likely happen the first three weeks of July. We have just been invited to perform in a festival in the south of Spain at the end of May, so we are working with our European agents to add some dates around that timeframe in various parts of Europe.
We hope you all have a great holiday and look forward to seeing you in the coming year.

As the year begins to slowly come to a close, we would once again like to thank all of you who have supported the cd and the shows, and also give you an update on all that is going on. There will be no more performances scheduled for the remainder of year with the exception of a possible benefit show in Los Angeles for Relief International to help raise money for the earthquake victims in Pakistan and Kashmir. If this happens, it will take place some time in November so please check back.
There are many wonderful things unfolding for us and it looks like we will be very busy next year. First off, we are thrilled to announce that Niyaz has been invited to perform in January 2006 at globalFEST as part of the annual Arts Presenters (APAP) conference in New York. Being selected for this showcase is a huge step for Niyaz as the most influential people in world music will be attending the event.
We have just signed with a booking agency in the US and a booking agency in Germany. Work is already underway for a summer 2006 tour both in the US as well as Europe if our schedule permits and if there is no conflict with dates. This is great news for us as it means we will be able to take the music to many more cities than we were able to this year.
Azam and Loga have once again been invited to perform in Jahan-e-Khusrau, the annual international Sufi music festival which takes place in New Delhi, India. It will take place during March 3-5 2006, and there is talk of a possible one day Jahan-e-Khusrau in Hyderabad, India following the New Delhi dates. The music we will be performing for this event will be much more of a traditional and acoustic nature. It will focus on very old mystical chants from Iran, and will also include original works created around the poetry of Rumi and Amir Khosrow. For those who are able to make the trek to that part of the world, we cannot emphasize enough the magnificence of this event, both from a visual standpoint as well as a musical one. If you are able to make it, you can count on it becoming one of the most memorable experiences of your lives, as it has become for us.
Lastly, we are currently working on a 3-5 minute EPK which will feature clips from our performance at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood as well an interview with Azam and Loga. The DVD will also include two full length songs from the show; “The Hunt”, and “Allahi Allah. For those who were not able to make it to a show, or live in cities we were unable to come perform in, this will be an opportunity for you to see a live performance. Although portions of the DVD will be posted on the site, we are considering making it available to fans who who would like to purchase it.
In the meantime Azam is beginning work with Loga on another solo album for Narada Records which is scheduled for release sometime in 2006. She will also be working this fall into next year with talented film composer Tyler Bates on a score for the upcoming major motion picture, 300, which is based on Frank Miller’s classic comic book. This is going to be an incredible score which will feature some of the best musicians and singers from Turkey, Iran, Armenia, Greece, and America.
We wish everyone the best in the coming months and look forward to another year of sharing our music with you.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this record, spread the word, and helped make it a success. It has been an incredible year so far. We started it off in March with our debut performance in New Delhi, India, as part of the annual international Sufi music festival, Jahan-e-Khusrau, which is curated by famed Indian film director Muzaffar Ali, and is held at the ancient 15th century ruins of Homayun’s tomb. The few photos we posted on the site cannot even begin to capture the magnificence of this space. Needless to say it was a once in a lifetime experience for us all, especially since the festival is centered around one of the most inspired vocalists in the world, Abida Parveen of Pakistan. Sharing the stage with her was truly an honor for us all.
Thanks to Six Degrees, our loyal fan base, and NPR, we had a very strong release following our trip to India. The album charted on Billboard’s World music chart for four consecutive weeks and peaked at #12. It also debuted at #1 on itunes World chart, and has been on and off the chart since.
We just returned from Montreal, canada, after three incredibly fulfilling shows in Washington DC, Toronto, and Montreal . Given it was our first time performing in Canada, the huge turn outs at the shows and amount of press we received was very unexpected and heartwarming. So thank you to all those who came to the shows and sent so much love and support our way, especially the 1000+ people who showed up to see us on such a rainy day in Montreal. We had so much fun making this album, and now being able to come out and meet all the wonderful people who have supported our work refuels us and fills us with an even deeper sense of inspiration.
The response to the shows has been very positive and many offers for performances are coming in so we are continuing to add new dates. Please check back regularly or sign up on our mailing list by sending us an e-mail so we can inform you of upcoming events. In the meantime there is serious talk of a full Canadian tour next summer. For all those kind souls who drove from New York to see us play in DC and did not get in, we have booked a show at Satalla for September 17th. We are really looking forward to coming out and meeting you all. And for all the fans who have supported this CD in Japan, it looks like we have finally locked in a performance date for November 27th. Final confirmation and details of the venue will be posted very shortly so please check back.
All the best from us and we’ll hopefully see you out there…………

APRIL 19 2005 . NEW RELEASE
Vas vocalist Azam Ali, Axiom of Choice’s multi-instrumentalist Loga Ramin Torkian, and producer/remixer Carmen Rizzo have joined forces to create a globe-spanning sound that the trio calls “folk music for the 21st century.” Known collectively as Niyaz, the trio’s first eponymous release is a hypnotic, ecstatic, and eminently danceable album that represents the best of both traditional world music and electronic music. All three of these musicians have built impressive individual careers.
